Message from the Committee

Join us in Edmonton in May for the 32nd National Conference of the Canadian Evaluation Society. The Alberta/Northwest Territories Chapter of CES has been planning an exciting conference that will provide opportunities to learn, share, and network with your colleagues.

Our host hotel, the Westin, is centrally located in the heart of downtown Edmonton. There is easy access to shops, restaurants and cultural attractions. Our scenic river valley including running paths is only a few blocks away.

In keeping with our Generations theme, we have a diverse range of presentations and workshops - truly, something for everyone.

Our 2011 theme is Generations: a multigenerational approach to evaluation. Over the past thirty years (one generation) the field of evaluation has changed. This conference will highlight:

  • changes in evaluation techniques and tools,
  • changes in evaluators including education, training, experiences and perspectives,
  • changes in the populations served by the programs and services we evaluate

Register early to ensure your choice of pre-conference workshops and 'stretch' your professional development funds by accessing the Early Bird discounts!

We look forward to seeing you in Edmonton - May 1 to 4, 2011.

Interested in hosting a thematic breakfast?

The thematic breakfasts are an important part of conference networking and learning. Topics can include new research, new ideas, controversial topics, how to solve a particular problem or strategize around an issue of importance to evaluators.

If you are interested in hosting a breakfast, please contact the CES Secretariat at CES@buksa.com.

The deadline to apply to host a Thematic Breakfast is April 1, 2011.

Greening the Conference

Here are some ways each of us can contribute to greening our conference and minimize our environmental imprint.

Getting here:

  • Register on-line if possible rather than printing paper copies.

At the conference:

  • Bring reusable mug or water bottle, pen/pencil and notepaper, laptop and data stick.
  • Collect business cards of presenters and have them e-mail reports and other information rather than collecting printed hand-outs.
  • Recycle your waste: bottles, cans, paper, etc.
  • Take advantage of energy and water conservation features of your hotel, such as not having sheets and towels changed every day.

On your own time:

  • Do your sightseeing by foot, bicycle or public transport.

We look forward to seeing you at the CES Conference in Edmonton!

CESEF Benefit Auction

Don't forget the CESEF Benefit Auction held Sunday night at the opening reception of the 2011 CES National Conference in Edmonton.

The Canadian Evaluation Society Educational Fund (CESEF) is a charitable organization that provides scholarships, awards, and educational opportunities to individuals wishing to pursue a career in the field of Program Evaluation.

The CESEF Auction has become an annual tradition where conference participants enjoy bidding on exciting items that have been generously donated by individuals and businesses. Thanks to all those who donated to the successful event last year in Victoria.

Experience the fun and become involved by volunteering to bring an interesting item. Included in last year's donations were a kindle, GPS system, art objects, and treasures brought from all the regions of Canada and around the world. Without the support of CES members, we would not have been able to reach our fundraising goals, nor would we have had the fun of bidding on so many terrific items.

If you wish to donate an item or make a cash donation for the committee to purchase articles on your behalf, please email Rita Gunn (gunn@pra.ca).

We hope to have you participate in another successful auction so that CESEF can continue to support the development of future evaluators in Canada.

Let's make this year's benefit auction in Edmonton the best yet!
